about.
We designed a connected hiking stick that helps users maintain their pace, ensures safety, signals potential hazards, and tracks performance. Paired with a smartphone, the stick becomes a true hiking companion, providing real-time information while keeping the focus on nature rather than constant screen checking. The project was completed within one week, aiming to create a connected object specifically for use in forests, mountains, and natural environments.
challenge.
The main challenge was to develop an object that balances ergonomics, functionality, and relevance for hikers. Key concerns included:
Understanding the proper usage of a hiking stick.
Anticipating user needs during hiking (pace, progression, altitude, rest, hydration).
Integrating meaningful features that go beyond a smartwatch while keeping the stick easy to use.
Avoiding accidental presses and ensuring the placement of buttons and sensors was intuitive.
User research at DECATHLON’s hiking showroom helped identify priorities, while field studies informed decisions on essential functionalities. User stories were created to simulate scenarios and determine which features were most valuable in context.
result.
The final solution is an ergonomic, connected hiking stick equipped with:
Real-time tracking of heart rate, distance, altitude, and steps.
Guidance for pacing, hydration, and breaks to optimize the hiking experience.
Safety features including an alert button and vibration cues for pace.
A companion app to visualize, share, and consult hiking routes.
A 3D model of the stick, complete with electronic components and a display showing key metrics, was developed to ensure practicality and usability. The project successfully merged digital services with the physical hiking experience, enhancing safety, social interaction, and immersion in nature.
